Teacher throws or rolls a hoop for each student to chase and catch.
Students roll hoops to chase and catch
Students roll hoops to each other to catch
Try throwing or rolling the hoop with a bit of English(a tilt of the hoop at a slight degree)
Side lunge jumps in and out of the hoop
One foot in and one foot out – jump sideways to the left and
switch feet.
Same skill to the right
Front lunge jumps as a variation
One foot in and one foot out – facing forwards, jump and switch feet.
Back Spin Game
Throw the hoop with as much back spin as you can which will cause the hoop to come back to you.
A have a child try to chase it down. The hoop will start rolling away from the student as the student gets close to the hoop.
Put a bit of English(tilt of the hoop) as you throw the hoop with back spin. The effect of the English will cause the hoop to change direction when spin of the hoop catches and reverses.
Hoop soccer/hockey
Set up several cones or obstacles as goals like a soccer field
The purpose is to get from one side of the field and score on the other team’s goal
The only way to stop the hoops is by kicking your hoop and intercepting the opposing teams hoop
Ask the children to kick the hoop with the tip of their foot. The hoop will slide like a puck slides on air hockey.
Each side of the hoop field will try the other side from scoring
For safety, make sure that students do not try to pick the hoops up with their hands because another child may be kicking close to the hoop the child is picking up with their hand.
Another variation is to as the children to stand inside the hoop and can only move around inside the hoop
Hula Hokey Pokey *
Hula Hoop Simon Say *
Hula Hoop Ring-around the Rosie’s *
Hula Hoop Toss just like ring toss using small, medium or large cones*
Hula Hoop Dance Contest *
Hula hoop flip and catch
Each child tries to flip a hoop with 180 Degrees and catches the hoop
10 Dancing hoops – Spin and twirl a hoop from the top and catch to stop it.
Spin a hoop – run around the hoop while it is spinning as many times as you can and still catch it before it stops spinning.
Spin 1 hoop, then 2 then 3 and keep going until the hoops start to drop down and lay on the floor.
Teach children how to roll their own hoop – rolling the hoop is different from throwing it.
I have the children use two or three fingers on top of the hoop as they hold the hoop sideways
The children rock the hoop back and forth two or three times and then rock and push at the same time to make the hoop roll away from them
Make different patterns with the hoops
Put Hoops close together or far apart to make the patterns challenging for the different age groups
Straight – Snake – hop scotch – zigzag Circle – square – tri-angle
Hold the hoop or hoops Horizontally
The instructor holds one or two hoops. Hold the hoop or hoops horizontally so the child/children can
Step into the hoop trying not touch the hoop as they step in and out of the hoop
Crawl or snake over the first hoop and under the next hoop
Ask children to hold the hoops for their friends to step in and out
Do all the above going
Forwards and Backwards Sideways right and left
Hold the hoop or hoops Vertically
The instructor holds on or two hoops vertically so the hoop is just high enough for the children to
Step in and out of the hoop
Jump in and out of the hoops if possible
Snake on their tummies underneath hoops
Snake on their backs underneath hoops
Do animal walks over hoops
Try as many of the above activities
Forwards and Backwards
Sideways Right and Left.
Make different combinations or obstacle courses from the activities
Please note: Please understand that toddlers (18 month to 30 month) may need more time in doing some of these activities. (1) They may need the hoops lower or closer to the floor because they do not have the balance of awareness necessary to step in or out of the hoops. (2) They may not understand the concept that is being taught to them at this time in their early development.
Step in & Out of the Car (put your head, elbow, knee ECT. In the hoop)
Each child holds their own hoop horizontally
First, put an arm in the hoop
Then an arm
Then the head
And rest of the body follows
And reverse the directions
Sitting & Stretching with a Hoop
Place a hoop between the child’s legs while in straddle a position
Stretch to the right foot then the left foot
Stretch forward and try to touch the front of the hoop
Stretch forward and try to touch both feet at the same time
Stretch forward and place one or two elbows inside the hoop
Sitting & Balance Using the
Children sit inside the hoop and
They lift the hoop, put their feet on the hoop and try to balance on their bottom.
Use one foot instead of two feet
Another variation - Lay down on their backs and lift the hoop up to vertical using their feet or foot
Another variation – children put the hoop behind their neck and put their feet on the hoop and try to balance in a V position
Body Position Game inside Hoops
Standing & Stretching with a Hoop
Balance on
Body part hoop spin game
Ask children to spin a hoop around using their arm, leg or neck
Jumping rope with the hoop – this is a great way, to introduce jump rope
Starting position is with the hoop touching the floor in front of them with both hands on the middle of the hoop (over grip position)
Step or jump over the hoop and ask children to lift the hoop straight up and over their head to the start position. – This is a great wrist and forearm exercise
Repeat until children can do it faster.
Forwards and backwards
Note: Younger children should step into the hoop instead of jumping. It is much easier. Older children are quicker and faster at rolling the hoop in their hands. That quickness gives older children the opportunity to jump through the hoop as they would jump rope. The major difference is that many children cannot make the jump rope do what they want it to do, the hoop allows the children to at least control part of the jump rope action using a stiff hoop verses a limp rope. Children should be encouraged to try both forward and backward jumping.
Jump in & out of the hoops
Give each child a hoop to stand in
Ask children to jump forwards, backwards and sideways out and in the hoop
Jump or hop around the hoop
Bounced the ball in the hoop
Bounce a ball while standing inside a hoop
Bounce a ball while standing outside a hoop
Partner bounce –
One child bounces pass in a hoop to another child
Jumping Jacks with hoops
Start with both feet inside an eighteen-inch hoop
b. then jump to feet apart on the outside of the hoop c. then jump to feet together inside the hoop c. repeat over and over Note: For younger children it is easier to do this game without the are movement in the beginning. Add the arms after the children have the leg actions under control. Older children can add the arm movement quickly.
Make a bridge over the hoop
Have the children do a front lean support (pushup position) over a hoop for that child's size.
Have children do a back lean support over a hoop
Have children go from front lean support to a back lean support and the back.
Have the children do a crab position over a hoop
Have the children walk around the hoop in the above positions
Share a hoop game
have as many hoops as you do children
Have children sitting or standing in a straight line
Arrange hoops in any pattern you want
On your command (signal) have the children run, walk, hop, skip, jump, crawl, snake, or crab walk into the hoops
on your next command the children go back to their starting positions.
Next the instructor takes on hoop away so that someone will have to share a hoop.
repeat steps 3, 4 and 5 until you (the instructor) feel it is safe for the children to be moving rapidly into one hoop without risking injury.
Note : The number of children that fit safely in a hoop depends on the size of the hoops ( 18-inch, 24-inch, 30 inch and 36 inch ) as well as the size of the children in that class.
Walk around the hoops as different animal
Place a hoop in front of each child
On the instructor’s command, children imitate the animal the instructor calls out
Instructor calls out time or makes an animal sound and children run back into their hoop for safety
Variation, children are free to roam around their friends hoops until instructor calls out time or makes an animal sound.
Hopscotch – with or without bean bags
Set up hoops in a hopscotch pattern
Set up different patterns for children to hop into
